“Sugar Performance”, Group C, Maison de la Culture Janine Sutto, October 2022
“Window” or “Sugar Performance” was a week long installation as a part of Group C’s ignagural exhibition “This Should Have Been Done A Long Time Ago”. The show was an exploration of ways to present group work, with each member installing a different work each week in the space. There was also a make-shift table containing research and materials, and a group video piece.
“Sugar Performance” dealt with themes of ephemerality and evolution to investigate what can be captured - not through preservation, but through change. The main material used in the work was hardnened sugar which took the form of flat planes or images as I like to think of them. The sugar melted and humidified throughout the week, degrading and losing its original form. Every other day, I came to the space and dissolved 1 of 3 planes of sugar in water that were suspended infront of the backdrop, as a sort of performance of the material.
While making this work, I thought about the photographic impulse and what it means to need to photograph everything. The impending dissapearance of the project, which was evident in its short duration and dissolving material, acted like a sunset - which asks us to photograph it incase we might miss it, or never see one like it again.
